The Knack

At first, my parents were devastated. They wanted me to be normal.

I remember that day with crystal clarity – it was the day I came out of the closet and revealed that I didn’t want to be an insurance salesman, a physician, or even a lawyer (ugh). For better or worse, whether nature or nurture, I proudly made it be known that I am, and forever will be, an engineer.

My parents, acquaintances, and friends ultimately accepted me for who I was. And with the enlightenment of changing times, I was able to cast aside that scarlet “E” from my chest.

However, my 93 year-old Mother frequently reminds me that there are still opportunities out there in Ponzi schemes and credit default swaps for an ambitious young man.

“Yes Mom”, I say. But under my breath is “I just don’t roll that way. ” -B
